Use a tablet as a secondary screen for reading while working on a laptop
A tablet can make laptop work more comfortable when your task involves reading research, checking instructions, monitoring messages, or keeping a reference document visible. Instead of constantly switching between browser tabs, you can place the tablet beside your laptop and use it as an extra display.
The setup works with iPads, Android tablets, Windows laptops, and MacBooks, although the best method depends on the devices you own. A wired connection is usually more stable, while a wireless connection is quicker to arrange. For Australians working from a home office, university library, or shared workspace in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or elsewhere, the right approach can also reduce dependence on a large desktop monitor.
Check compatibility before setting up
First identify the operating system on both devices. Apple’s Sidecar feature allows a compatible iPad to extend or mirror a Mac display. Windows laptops can connect to some Android tablets through apps such as spacedesk, while Samsung Galaxy tablets may offer extra display functions through Samsung’s software. Universal apps such as Duet Display can work across a wider mix of computers and tablets.
Compatibility often depends on the model, operating system version, and whether the devices use the same account. An older iPad may not support the latest macOS features, and an inexpensive Android tablet may have limited support for external-display apps. Check the developer’s current requirements before paying for software.
It is also worth checking the ports on your laptop. A USB-C cable may carry both data and power, but not every USB-C port supports video or the required connection mode. If you are buying a cable or adapter from an Australian retailer such as Officeworks, JB Hi-Fi, or Big W, check whether it supports data transfer rather than charging only.
Choose between wireless and wired connections
Wireless screen sharing is the simplest option for occasional reading. Install a trusted second-screen application on the laptop and tablet, connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network, and follow the pairing instructions. This suits reading PDFs, recipes, web pages, or notes while writing on the main computer.
A wireless connection can become less reliable when the network is crowded. This may happen in a busy apartment building, a university campus, or a home where several people are streaming through an NBN connection. If the tablet image freezes or the cursor feels delayed, move closer to the router or switch to a wired connection.
A cable generally provides lower latency and a steadier image. It is particularly useful when reading detailed spreadsheets, following a coding guide, or keeping a reference window open for several hours. The trade-off is reduced flexibility: the tablet must remain close to the laptop, and some apps require a paid licence for wired display support.
Set up an iPad with a MacBook
For a recent MacBook and compatible iPad, open Control Centre on the Mac, select Screen Mirroring, and choose the iPad. You can then select whether the tablet mirrors the Mac screen or extends the desktop. In extended mode, drag a document or browser window towards the edge of the Mac display until it appears on the iPad.
Sidecar normally works best when both devices use the same Apple Account and have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. The devices should be reasonably close together. If the iPad does not appear, sign out of any unnecessary VPN, restart both devices, and confirm that software updates have been installed.
An iPad works well as a reading panel because its touchscreen makes scrolling natural. An Apple Pencil can also be useful for marking up a PDF, highlighting a university reading, or writing a quick annotation while the main laptop screen remains dedicated to a document or video call.
Connect a Windows laptop to an Android tablet
Android tablets usually need a third-party application to act as a laptop monitor. Install the same app on both devices, launch the desktop driver on Windows, and then pair the tablet through Wi-Fi or USB. The app’s settings should let you choose between mirroring and extending the Windows desktop.
For a Samsung Galaxy Tab, the built-in Second Screen feature may provide a simpler route with selected Galaxy Book computers. Open the tablet’s quick settings, select the second-screen option, and choose the laptop when it appears. The exact menu name varies by model and One UI version.
Set the tablet’s display to a comfortable resolution rather than the highest available setting if text appears tiny. Windows display settings can also adjust scaling. A reading screen is most useful when paragraphs, menus, and controls are legible without leaning forward or repeatedly zooming.
Arrange windows for focused reading
Place the tablet on the side that matches the direction you naturally look when checking reference material. If you type with your right hand, placing the tablet slightly to the left may keep your writing arm clear. A folding case or adjustable stand is safer than laying the tablet flat, especially if you are working at a kitchen table in a small Brisbane or Adelaide home office.
Use the laptop for active tasks and the tablet for information that needs occasional attention. For example, keep a Google Docs draft, spreadsheet, or video-editing timeline on the laptop while displaying a browser article, e-book, PDF manual, or project checklist on the tablet. This reduces window switching and makes it easier to compare information.
Activate reading-friendly settings where available. Increase text size, use a warm colour temperature in the evening, and enable dark mode when it suits the material. Keep the tablet at roughly the same height as the laptop to reduce neck movement, particularly during long study sessions or remote workdays.
Manage power, notifications, and privacy
Using a tablet as a second display can drain its battery, especially when the screen stays bright and the wireless connection remains active. Keep a charger nearby, but avoid placing a warm tablet under clothing or papers. In Australia’s hotter summer conditions, a device in direct afternoon sunlight can become uncomfortable or trigger thermal slowdowns.
Turn off unnecessary notifications before starting. Message previews appearing beside confidential work can expose personal information, and frequent alerts defeat the purpose of a dedicated reading screen. Enable Focus, Do Not Disturb, or a separate work profile if your tablet supports it.
Only install screen-sharing software from the official App Store, Google Play, or the developer’s verified website. Screen-extension tools may request permissions for display capture or accessibility features, so review those requests carefully. Avoid using an untrusted application on a work laptop, particularly when handling customer records, banking information, or business documents.
Fix common connection and display problems
If the tablet is not detected, restart both devices and check that the application is running on the laptop. Confirm that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network rather than one using a guest network. Corporate, hotel, and public Wi-Fi can block device discovery, so USB may be the more dependable option in a co-working space or while travelling on an interstate work trip.
A delayed pointer often comes from weak Wi-Fi, battery-saving settings, or a busy laptop processor. Close unnecessary browser tabs, reduce the secondary display’s resolution, and connect the devices with a cable if possible. For reading, a slight delay is usually acceptable, but it becomes distracting if you try to drag windows or edit text on the tablet.
When text looks blurry, adjust display scaling and use the tablet’s native resolution where practical. If the image is cropped, change the arrangement in Windows Display Settings or macOS Displays. Test the setup with a short document before relying on it for a full workday, and keep a downloaded copy of important reading in case the connection fails.
A tablet is most effective as a companion display when it has a clear role: reference material, a checklist, messages, or a document for comparison. Start with the built-in option for your devices, then consider a reputable app if the operating systems do not work together. Keep the screen at a comfortable height, use a stable cable or network, and protect your privacy by controlling notifications and permissions. For everyday laptop work, that simple arrangement can turn an existing tablet into a practical reading screen without the cost or desk space of a full monitor.
