How to verify your iPhone battery health

Your iPhone’s Battery Health screen gives a useful estimate, but it is not a direct measurement of the battery’s remaining chemical capacity. If the percentage seems unusually high, drops suddenly, or does not match real-world battery life, you can cross-check it using charging behaviour, cycle information, service records and Apple’s own diagnostics.

This matters in Australia, where phones can face hot summer conditions in Sydney, Brisbane or Perth, long commutes, heavy navigation use and frequent charging from power banks. Battery health also affects the value of an iPhone sold through local marketplaces or traded in at retailers such as JB Hi-Fi and Apple.

What the battery health percentage means

Maximum Capacity compares the battery’s current capacity with its capacity when new. A new iPhone is normally shown as 100%, although the displayed figure can change after setup, software updates or recalibration. A reading of 85% does not mean the phone will last exactly 15% less in every situation because usage, signal strength, brightness and background activity vary.

Apple generally treats a battery as significantly aged when it falls below 80% of its original capacity, though that is a service guideline rather than a sudden failure point. An iPhone at 82% may work acceptably, while one at 91% can still shut down unexpectedly if it has a damaged cell or another hardware fault.

Open Settings, tap Battery, then Battery Health & Charging. Check both Maximum Capacity and Peak Performance Capability. A message saying that the iPhone is supporting normal peak performance is reassuring, while an unexpected shutdown warning or performance-management message deserves closer investigation.

Look for signs of an inaccurate reading

A battery percentage that stays unchanged for many months is not automatically suspicious. iOS updates the estimate gradually and may avoid displaying every small change. However, a sudden fall of several percentage points, rapid drops from 30% to 10%, or a phone that dies while showing 15% can indicate that the estimate is not fully aligned with the battery’s actual condition.

Heat can also make the battery appear worse temporarily. Leaving an iPhone in a hot car near Melbourne’s summer beaches, using GPS in direct sun, or charging under a pillow can raise its temperature and reduce performance. Apple advises avoiding use and charging outside the recommended operating range, especially above 35°C.

Test the phone during ordinary use rather than relying on one afternoon. A 5G connection in a weak-signal area can consume far more energy than Wi-Fi, so compare similar conditions across two or three charge cycles.

Check the battery’s history and authenticity

On supported iPhone models running a recent version of iOS, go to Settings, General, About and look for Parts and Service History. Depending on the model and repair, the battery may be listed as Genuine, Used, or accompanied by an “Unknown Part” warning. This is particularly important when buying a refurbished iPhone from Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace or a small online seller.

An unknown-part warning does not always mean the battery is unsafe. It can mean iOS cannot verify the replacement or that the component was installed outside Apple’s recognised repair process. Still, the Maximum Capacity figure may be less trustworthy, and the battery could be a recycled, low-quality or incorrectly programmed component.

Check the model’s cycle count when iOS provides it, especially on newer iPhone generations. One cycle means using a total of 100% of the battery’s capacity, not necessarily draining from 100% to zero in one session. For example, using 60% one day and 40% the next equals roughly one cycle. Cycle count is evidence of usage, not a guarantee of health, because storage conditions and heat also affect ageing.

Use analytics data carefully

The iPhone stores diagnostic information that can provide extra clues. Go to Settings, Privacy & Security, Analytics & Improvements, then Analytics Data. Search for files containing terms such as “battery,” “cycle,” or “panic.” The exact file names and available fields differ between iOS versions, so this method is best used as supporting evidence rather than a definitive report.

Some third-party desktop tools can display battery cycles, design capacity and full-charge capacity when the iPhone is connected by cable. Utilities such as coconutBattery are commonly used with a Mac, while Windows tools may offer similar readings. Treat these values cautiously: an app can only interpret the data exposed by iOS or the device, and some replacement batteries report incomplete or misleading information.

Avoid downloading unknown battery-checking profiles or granting broad permissions to an app that promises a perfect health score. A simple percentage from an unverified tool should never outweigh the iPhone’s service history, physical behaviour and Apple diagnostic results.

Calibrate the estimate without abusing the battery

Modern iPhones manage charging automatically, so repeatedly draining the phone to zero is not a good maintenance routine. Lithium-ion batteries age faster when exposed to high temperatures, deep discharges and long periods at full charge. If the percentage seems inconsistent, perform an occasional controlled check rather than a regular full drain. Know when a professional check is worthwhile

If Maximum Capacity looks healthy but the iPhone becomes very hot, restarts, swells, loses charge rapidly or shuts down above 10%, stop treating the percentage as the main answer. A swollen battery is a safety issue. Do not press on the screen, puncture the phone or continue charging it; arrange an assessment through Apple, an Apple Authorised Service Provider or a reputable repairer.
